Without getting too far into the engine code weeds here, let’s just say that the very first air quote “M6” showed up in 1983 at the Frankfort Motor Show. In reality, the 6-series M started out as the M635CSi for Europe in 1983, which was effectively a regular 6-series with an M1 engine bolted in.
Then you have the North American version coming along 3 years later as the actual “M6″…it had the S38 engine in it pushing about 260hp. Not as fast as the Euro spec version due to catalytic converter constraints, but 0-60 runs were still under 7 seconds in a coupe weighing about 3,500lbs.
Luxurious and powerful…and very limited in production, the E24 series would run from 1983 – 1989. In total, only 5,855 M6/MM635CSi cars were produced, of which only 1,632 ever made it to the U.S. In terms of rare, this one ranks high.
Today at Second Daily Auctions we are proud to offer this pristine very well-kept 1987 M6 in Jet Black over white leather. This one has seen only 67k miles since new and is powered by a dual overhead cam 3.5L inline-6 cylinder mated to a Getrag 5-speed manual gear box.
It comes with a clean history and CarFax. Financing is available through the seller if desired. A low reserve has been set and partial proceeds benefit the SEMA Cares charity foundation.
The original Jet Black paint remains intact and presents with very high gloss. Some light swirls can be seen in the paint up close, very typical of black colored cars. Some light spider crackling can be seen in the lower air dam up close. All the panels gaps appear even and none seem mis-aligned.
The emblems are all intact and show some light fading, the plastics all present well without any cracking. No visible rust can be seen and none is reported. The headlights are clear as is all the glass.
The period correct BBS Mahle wheels appear in great condition, and are fitted with 15″ Michelin TRX 240/45 tires.
Inside this 30 year old BMW feels like it did when new. The white leather has been amazingly kept clean and free of any apparent stains. All appears as original, no switches or knobs appear to be missing. No excessive wear can be seen and it presents very well given the age. The only apology is the leather dash. It has visibly warped and pulled away from its seams just above the center air vent. Throughout the enthusiast forums, this is a very common issue on the these E24’s. The solution for most is an upholstered replacement wrap for approximately $500 (some reported averages).
Production volume was very low for the M6, with very few ever making it stateside. Hagerty values and recent auction values put the E24 at a blistering pace of increasing value. This is of no surprise given how other models from the German automaker have trended in the last few years. We said it in an earlier piece this year, best to get on the E24 M6 train now because it is quickly leaving the affordability station.

Did the 87 BMW M6 sell? I missed the end and am very upset with myself. Was the reserve met at 5500.00?
Please notify me if she goes back for auction. Thank you.
Hi Limon911, the reserve was not met. Check the Market value section and estimated value section of this ad to give you an idea of where the reserve is. As one of the bidders though, you will have recently received an overtime offer. If you accept this offer, it effectively acts as a Buy It Now and you win the auction. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Wonderful!
Thank you for your quick reply.
I just noticed it did not sell due to the reserve not being met. Is she going back on auction? What happens to a vehicle now that the reserve has not been met?
I bid 6000.00
Are there any underside photos of the car?
