Statistically speaking, it’s not uncommon that we would have both a Volvo 244 (240 4-door sedan) and a 245 (5-door wagon) listed at the same time. After all, Volvo sold 3 million of them during its nearly 20 year reign from ’74 to ’93. Compound that with the fact that we personally are Volvo fans, having gone through five of them in the family, including an 855R sedan and a V70R P2 wagon. And lastly further layer on top that both 240’s are for sale by the same seller in Oregon, who he himself, is a self-proclaimed Volvo nut.
Volvos have a cult following that is easy to see when you’re in it, and strangely obscure when you’re not. We mention in the other ad how the Volvo is the rockstar of the obscure, and in fact there actually are a few rockstars among the cultish following. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana drove one ironically because of the safety ratings he once said, and Ingvard Kamprad founder of Ikea, gets it and loves the economy boxy style it brings. The bland-boxy car-next-door good-looks is partly what gives the 240 its cult status. In a world of over-indulgence and look-at-me attitudes of so many, the Volvo 240 is paradoxically popular because of its anti-status symbol. And we love it for that. And so does the market. The 240 has been appreciating as the cult following grows and original unmodified ones are becoming increasingly rare.
We present today a 1987 Volvo 240 DL 5-door wagon with only 128k miles. The CarFax will show two owners, however, the original owner was in possession from 1987 to July 2017. It was purchased from an estate, registered and being offered for sale through an Oregon dealer. No accidents or damage are known or reported, and the VIN does not appear in the NICB database for reported theft or total loss.
Both interior and exterior present very well, and the seller reports there is no rust anywhere on the car. The panels all appear straight without any unusual gaps or misalignment. If you really want to nit pick, the right front headlight may be slightly misaligned relative to the other. This could be the angle of the pictures as no damage appears and none has been reported. All emblems appear to be intact, even the ‘VOLVO’ side panel emblems that remained a staple of the brand until 1999. All 8 glass panels appear very clear and free of any cracks. Sound familiar?
A walk-around the exterior shows very little to point out. The high-gloss paint is believed to be original and shows very well with no blemishes of any note. The seller points out a small paint chip area on the bonnet above the headlight. The roof top shows no indication of fading or peeling. The marker lights show no signs of fading or cracking. The original wheels present well with all steel “V” Volvo hubcaps properly in place, and the 14″ tires show plenty of tread.
The engine bay presents incredibly well, and a relatively new Interstate battery is installed. No mileage discrepancies appear on the CarFax.
The interior presents very well, no signs of abuse or even excessive use. The blue vinyl seats are believed to be original and show no tears and very little signs of wear. The only wear seen is on the left driver seat bolster area. The original steering wheel shows no excessive wear or breaking down. The headliner shows no obvious signs of tears, stains, or water leaking. The door jams appear clean and free of rust.
No noticeable buttons appear to be missing or damaged. The shift boot and knob show no signs of wear or tear.
The rear cargo area is free of any noticeable stains or tears. Underneath the carpet no rust or problem areas are present. How a Volvo station wagon can survive for 30-years without even the faintest of hints of use is a feat not accomplished by many. Surely the grocery bags spilled over at least once, but you would never know it.
The Volvo wagon is the staple all persons and families should experience at least once. This 240 is the type of wagon you might see parked at the beach house on Nantucket, at the country chalet in the mountains of Virginia or sitting curbside in downtown San Francisco drawing a few stares because of its iconic stance. If you missed out on the 240 30 years ago, now’s your chance to relive that time…and best of all, it’s a 5-speed.

Sweet Brick….
Seller, has this car been smoked in?…
Thanks for the interest. From what I can tell, there are no cigarette burns and does not smell like cigarettes at all. Doesn’t smell like pets either. Very clean car inside.
Thanks… Does this car have AC?… I see the knob on the dash, but I can’t make out a compressor or hoses in the underhood pic… I thought the drier was behind the passenger front shock tower on these… but it may be in a different location in an ’87… If it does have AC, is it functional?… R12?… R134?….
Has the button for A/C. Last time I checked it didn’t blow cold. Never been told by previous owner that it was converted to R134. I didn’t look for the pump myself, I can check when I’m back in town tuesday. Here in Oregon we don’t use A/C very much since it’s always cold and rainy. The heater works good though, that’s a must here.
Sweet Volvo! I’d love to ask a few questions. Any recent engine work done? Gaskets? Seals? Was this a daily driver or did it sit for long periods of time? Looks very clean!
Would you call the prospect of flying to Oregon and driving it to Texas an adventure or a misadventure? Looks like shipping it would be fairly expensive. Great looking car.
