Before there was IMS, fried-egg headlight slandering, and water vs air-cooled knock downs amongst those deep in the Porsche community, there was…the transaxle. Rewind to 1976, to a time where Jimmy Carter was taking office and Porsche was putting transmissions on top of rear axles and using water to cool front-mounted engines. That’s right, that 1996 mid-engined Boxster with antifreeze flowing through its pipes wasn’t Porsches’ first rodeo in water-controlled heat displacement. The engineers at Weissach discovered that by placing the transmission atop the rear axle, a near-perfect weight balance could be achieved, providing both great traction, cornering and braking.
In the early 70’s, Porsche began development of what would become the 928, a larger grand touring sports coupe that would house the first and only front-mounted V8 for a coupe. By 1977, Porsche had a few years of front-engine transaxle experience under their belts. The 924 was a great start, but it had no appeal for the older more refined audience that Porsche would soon like to attract. The 928 entered into the market in late ’77 as a ’78 model. It departed from the 911/912 market quite dramatically in audience appeal and engineering, and so it would be sold alongside its Porsche counterparts rather than serve as a replacement. In May 1978, Don Sherman and Brock Yates would both label it “Best New Car” in their Car & Driver columns. As we all know for the late Brock to state this, it must be good. It was so good in fact, Porsche kept it in the line up for nearly 20 years, outlasting the 924, the 944, and finally finishing along side the 968 in 1995.
Second Daily Auctions is proud to present this 1988 Porsche 928 S4 finished in Silver Metallic (#980) over Burgundy leather with the highly desirable and rare 5-speed manual transmission. From new, this one has seen only 68k miles. This 928 retains it original and working “Monterey-Reno” radio. The factory security alarm is reportedly still operational, as is the front/rear A/C and power sunroof. A Porsche Certificate of Authenticity will also be included.
Outside the high gloss original paint presents well. The body panel gaps all look factory with no misalignment noticeable. All of the lights, lenses and glass show no apparent cracks. Inside presents as a time-capsule, no clear or obvious wear or stains can be seen. The seller reports no issues are currently plaguing this 928.
The seller points out that an improper repair was attempted on the right rear leather binding near the side window (seen in pictures) by the prior owner. That has now been repaired and new pictures are forthcoming. There is a very faint paint fade reported on the exterior driver side quarter panel. No known accidents are reported and nothing suggests otherwise.
New tires were recently installed, and it received a fresh oil change. All items are reportedly working.
We know that about 61,000 928’s were made in the nearly 20 year run of the grand coupe. So at the grand scale, 928’s aren’t that uncommon, well, at least they didn’t used to be. When is the last time you’ve seen one? Given the setup here, this one is 1 of only 463 manual 5-speeds from the ’88 S4 model year.
Values of the 928 have steadily climbed since early 2013. Values of the ’88 MY range from $28,000 to $60,000 depending on mileage and condition. Couple the 3-pedal shifting with the sheer originality and low miles to add a premium value compared to other counterparts currently on the market. Additionally, the seller has set the reserve very competively adjusting for the needed items not addressed in the PPI.

Second Daily is an online curated auction house for specialty vehicles like you see here. Auctions run 24/7 and are 100% online. A reserve price has been set, so you must meet the reserve price with your bid in order to win the auction. If your bid is below the reserve, you may continue to bid until you hit the reserve price. The estimated value of the vehicle will give you an estimated indication of where the reserve price sits.
You may choose the style of bidding you prefer, either a Direct (exact) bid or Dynamic (proxy) bid which is the default. If your proxy bid amount exceeds the reserve price, it will only bid to the reserve. It will increment up to your maximum if someone bids against you. I’m local I would like to inspect the car before bidding. How can we arrange for that?
I can arrange an inspection anytime. The car doesn’t get driven in inclement weather, so try to pick a nice day so you can drive it. I will be around this upcoming weekend should you want to take a look. Let me know. Thanks!
This weekend works for me. How do we get in touch?
I am trying to bid but cannot
We just tested the bidding and it is working fine. Please 1.) be sure you are logged in 2.) you have a valid credit card on file 3.) you MUST type in your bid amount. If you have never bid with us, some people have noted their credit card company put a fraud alert. You can also check that but that has been rare. Most common issue is, people not typing in their bid amounts.
I cannot get a bid to register
Will you be posting it for sale again?
If anyone would like to purchase this car, please contact us. We are still promoting this 928 S4 for sale.
What are the next steps with this car as it appears to have not met reserve.
