The iconic Defender was made by Land Rover from 1983 – 2016. The “Defender” moniker, though, didn’t actually come into view until 1991, when Land Rover needed to distinguish it from the incoming Discovery. In the U.S. however, we did not have the pleasure of such vehicles until 1993. Land Rover of North America approved the importation of 500 Defender 110’s for the 1993 model year, all numbered and badged on the right rear. Following that ’93 run, in 1994 the 2-door Defender 90 version rolled ashore. Less than 7000 Defender 90’s were imported into North America in 1994 – 1997 and became known as the NAS ‘North American Spec’ (also numbered on rear badges) trucks.
NAS Defenders had to meet specific US EPA guidelines so some differences do exist between same model year ROW (rest of world) and NAS Defenders. The One Ten (110) represents the 110″ wheelbase length. The earlier ROW trucks differ from the later NAS examples mostly in engine and drivetrain components and lack of an internal roll cage. Very little changed in the 10 years prior to seeing them stateside. In fact, very little changed at all, ever.
Second Daily is proud to offer this 1992 Land Rover Defender 110 clad in its original Portofino Red (except it originally had the common white roof). It originally served time as a Spanish fire patrol vehicle so it hails from a warm dry climate area. After that it became a camping excursion vehicle until the owner married an English man and left the vehicle in a Spanish barn for 8 years. The current owner acquired the truck in 2015 and began a 3 year part-time project of bringing it back to life. The seller has added about 8k miles in total since taking possession. It sits now in southern Florida with a clean clear title in a family member’s name, and to convey are Spanish records and a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate.
Financial and shipping assistance is available. We also offer our Buying Assistance program to help facilitate the transaction between buyer and seller. If you would like to have this vehicle inspected, Second Daily will cover up to $200 on a pre-purchase inspection if you go on to purchase the vehicle.
The paint is original so expect to see a few scratches and some minor paint flaking near the rear lights but no dents can be seen. The doors were replaced with new (yet retro) safari doors and sliding windows. The front doors, new lower sill panels, wheel arches and roof were painted in Portofino red to match. The removable door tops are red underneath but wrapped in gloss black to complete the floating roof look. There are new hinges and new matching door catches and locks throughout. Also added were new door steps, front lights and a new grille. The front windscreen has been replaced and DOT approved panoramic side windows were professionally fitted in 2018. The seller notes that seamless windows are perfect for privacy if camping and also help keep the interior cool. The wheels are new Sawtooth 16″ alloy wheels and wear BFGoodrich All Terrain KO2 tires. The rear door has had the rear wiper and defogger removed and a new Mantec wheel carrier holds the spare.
The seller notes there is no rust on the truck and we see no evidence of any in the pictures provided except what appears to be some small surface spotting in the passenger floor pan (pic included in the gallery). The bulkhead and rear crossmember appear solid.
Inside are Exmoor Trim Modular seats finished in brown cloth/vinyl material, along with new door panels and new Tithonus moulded floor and a seat matting system for sound insulation. The rear has new rubber matting and Tithonus military seats to one side complete with new lap belts. Envisaged as a weekend recreational vehicle, the other side has been deliberately left blank for fixing a gun case, fishing case, lockable storage, bed or any other bug-out accouterments of desire. The heater system was removed, dismantled, fully cleaned, resealed and fitted with a new blower motor. A new versatile central dash console has been installed but left blank. A new owner could fit a radio, additional dials or touch screen bluetooth/sat/nav. Newly added is a complete A/C system installed in 2018 (amen to that in the south).
This D110 is powered by a 2.5L 200TDI 4-cyl diesel mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and a 2-speed transfer case. The seller reports that a recent top-end rebuild was completed, which included machining the cylinder head, as well as a new water pump, reconditioned fuel injection pump (nice), new valves, springs, seals, gaskets, head bolts, camshaft belt, and belt tensioner. The viscous-clutch fan was replaced with an electric Revotech unit. An Ashcroft transmission, clutch and heavy duty fork is new as of 2016. The transfer box was replaced with one from a Discovery for better highway gearing. It had new bearings, oil seals and the uprated cross drilled input gear fitted. Both propshafts are new as are the rear halfshafts and Terrafirma Heavy Duty rear drive members. The front axle was replaced with a complete military reconditioned one with new discs and swivel hubs. The suspension was rebuilt with new springs, shocks and galvanized shock turrets. A new steering guard protects a new steering damper and tie rod.
The speedometer has the wrong drive gear and generally reads about 5mph slow and the differential lock warning light does not work. 134k miles are shown on the odometer, however true mileage is unknown.
This D110 reportedly starts easily, pulls strongly, has a tight drive-train and strong grappling brakes. The seller states it will sit comfortably between 65-70mph. “It wont go fast, but it will go any where.” Agreed … with A/C and room for a bed in the back, count us in on your next excursion. It is titled, tagged and 100% legal in the US. Inspections are welcomed and encouraged for any serious buyers. If you order an inspection on this truck and ultimately purchase it, Second Daily will credit you for the cost of inspection up to $200.
