The Mercedes-Benz G-wagon…what is it? You know, it’s that cool retro-boxy styled SUV from Mercedes that stars choose to buy for grocery shopping. It’s the one of grainy TMZ photos of Hollywoodians climbing in after yoga class. It is the essence of obscure luxury. Well, at least the ones you see today are. But the G-wagon has a past not many know about, and with production now creeping up to 40 years, some earlier examples are showing up in the affordable range. But don’t go buying one of the early trucks off the street thinking you’re getting typical MB luxury, you’ll be disappointed.
Originally developed as a military vehicle in collaboration with Austrian manufacturer Steyr-Daimler-Puch, the Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen (German for cross-country vehicle) was first offered to the public in 1979, but only until 2002 were they sold in the US. They are as capable off the road as they are pleasant to look at. They are the Defender / Land Cruiser / Patrol of Germany. Luckily, as with many of these great 70s, 80s, and early 90’s icons, they are starting to age in and can now be imported legally into the U.S. Those early G-wagens endured testing in ecosystems ranging from the deserts of the Middle East to the sub-zero temperatures in the Arctic Circle. Today, they are posh highway street cruisers and we’ve just listed a very nice one for our readers.
For sale is this 1992 Mercedes-Benz G350D Gelandewagen SWB (short wheel base) showing just over 126,000 kms (~78k miles). It was previously sold here on Second Daily. and the current owner has performed multiple maintenance items since purchasing. She is selling it now only to get into something newer that is a more comfortable true daily driver. The mileage and condition are much the same as she rarely drove it in her 15 months of ownership. It was imported from Italy in 2017 and is located in California with a clear CA title. It is powered by a 3.5-liter turbodiesel inline-6 cylinder mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission with factory triple lockers (front, center, rear). Records of services performed under the current seller’s ownership are available.
The exterior finish appears to be in excellent condition and is believed to have been repainted at some time in the recent past. Exterior modifications from new include a factory brush guard. The seller reports the exterior to be in good condition, clean with no dents or bumps to note. There are some small blemishes seen on the front bumper pictures. The seller reports there was previously a small rust spot that was treated above the right rear tire area by the previous owner, noting it only for full disclosure and says no other signs of rust on or beneath the car are present.
The interior is trimmed in black leather with black carpeting. According to the seller, there are no stains or damage to note, no smells and overall in what appears to be excellent condition. There are some blemishes noted on the wood trim near the locker switches. An aftermarket JVC radio has been added and the working odometer shows just over 126k kilometers (~78K miles). Known issues include the driver’s side window doesn’t roll down all the way and the windshield wipers are currently not working (no attempt to diagnose). The Gwagen reportedly starts, runs, drives, shifts, and stops without issue.
Maintenance done recent to her purchase:
Maintenance performed by the current seller over the last 15 months:
Note that the pictures taken inside the showroom are from the previous sale and the window tint has since been removed.

When looking from the back the right rear bumper looks like it’s sagging?? Is there a reason for this? Can it be fixed?
apologies, the seller is travelling and has not been able to provide additional pics or comments.
Nice looking truck. Can we get some good pictures of the underbody…..particularly door edges and rear quarters??
Are there any areas of rust/bubbling??
Only rust reported was areas disclosed around right rear tire. We will check with seller about photos beyond what is here.
Do you have photos of the underbody? And VIN ? Thanks.
