The 8-series BMW’s are 2-door coupe grand tourers produced from 1989 to 1999 and came equipped with a V8 or a V12 (available in the US starting in 1991). They weren’t designed as a 6-series replacement but rather to appeal to a market looking for something more refined, more upscale and luxurious, more GT than the 6-series offered. Variants include the 850i (first model launched, equipped with a V12), the 840Ci (from ’93 – ’99, V8), the 850Ci (the 850i renamed in 1993), and the 850CSi (top of the line built from the M8 prototype…so think what an M8 would be had they ever produced it).
Second Daily is proud to present this original condition low-mileage 1995 BMW 840ci powered by the M60 4.0L V8 and paired to a 5-speed automatic transmission (the manual was never a factory US offering). This was the last year of the M60 powerplant, which would go on to be replaced by the larger 4.4L M62, though power output stayed the same at 282hp. This coupe shows only 93k miles since new and is one of only 2,450 BMW 840’s to hit the North American shores, as production of the 8-series ended in 1997. Originally from Arizona, it was used sparingly as a true second daily driver for 22 year under the same owner. The seller reports the CarFax and Experian report show no accidents or issues.
This one ships from New York with a clean clear title in the seller’s name. Second Daily will cover up to $200 of the cost of a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) if you order one and then go on to purchase the car. So bid with confidence knowing we’ve got you covered. You must make arrangements prior to auction close and successfully win the auction to receive the $200 credit.
Outside, the Laguana Green paint is stated to be original and still has a quality shine, the clear-coat is not faded or peeling. It was regularly waxed and covered, but a professional detailing could possibly clear up a few light scratches and touch ups. The seller notes there is nothing of any concern or significance, no rust to be found on the body and the panels line up beautifully. The front spoiler, which houses the brake-cooling air intakes, has a small crack from a low parking lot curb. The seller states it is not noticeable but wanted to point it out. No pits or dents are seen in the hood, and the windshield looks to be in excellent condition, as does the rest of the glass as the seller reports there are no cracks/chips/delamination. The doors open and close easily with a thud and no rattles. The door jambs and underside have no rust and all weatherstripping is present on doors, windows, and trunk. All trim pieces and molding are original and intact, including tail light lenses. The front headlight covers, which is a rarity on BMWs, operate smoothly with no problems (retractable halogen lighting units w/main high beams, super-ellipsoid low beams). All lights function as they should (high, low beams, high speed driving lights, and “flash to pass” feature). The turn signals, tail lights, and all other features work as new. The aluminum wheels are original, and show very well (16 X 7.5 cast alloy wheels) with no noticeable curb damage. The original dual twin exhaust has no damage and reportedly sounds great.
Inside, the beige saddle leather seating shows exceptionally well, with no obvious signs of cracks, rips or tears . This continues into the rear seats as they show very nicely also (the seller even states it is quite possible no one has ever sat in the back). The memory system for the driver seat and head-restraint/seatbelt height, steering wheel (electronically controlled tilt and telescopic), outside mirrors (3-settings), and multi-information display all work as they should. An aftermarket Alpine receiver and multi-disc CD player was added recently. The dashboard with gathered leather, door inserts, center-console sides, and sun-visors look to be very good order. This CI is equipped with the center arm-rest with additional storage. A locking glovebox with beverage holder, rechargeable take-out flashlight, and map reading lights work as they should. There are no scratches near the switch gear or buttons that are noticeable. It was recently fitted with a new headliner. No dash warning lights are reported to be on.
The current seller has been in possession of this 840CI for the last two years. In the last year, the seller has performed the following:
- Oil change with new filter
- New headliner including sunroof adjustment
- New rotors, pads, and brake calipers to factory specs ( currently less than 500 miles since install)
- New Cooper Touring tires (currently less than 500 miles)
- Two new Bosch batteries (with highest CCA available) with 8 year warranties
The seller notes the reason for selling is their new living situation does not permit enough parking spaces to keep this GT modern classic as a third car.
The debate rolls on about 840 vs 850 … V8 vs V12. Everything has its pros and cons. The great thing about the V8 is the cost to maintain is much lower. Do any small amount of research and you’ll find this to be the case among actual owners. We never had the manual option in the US, and the auto makes for a great daily commuter and is typically the common choice with road worthy grand tourers. The 8-series have been suppressed for quite awhile in the market, and have recently started to trend upwards. Well-maintained ones under 100k miles are getting harder and harder to find.
A portion of the sale proceeds will go to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (located in Memphis, Tennessee) and the Shriner Hospital for Children (from the seller) and Second Daily will additionally contribute to this effort upon the sale of this 840CI.
