The Mercedes-Benz G-wagon…what is it? You know, it’s that cool retro-boxy styled SUV from Mercedes that stars choose to buy for grocery shopping. It’s the one of grainy TMZ photos of Hollywoodians climbing in after yoga class. It is the essence of obscure luxury. Well, at least the ones you see today are. But the G-wagon has a past not many know about, and with production now creeping up to 40 years, some earlier examples are showing up in the affordable range. But don’t go buying one of the early trucks off the street thinking you’re getting typical MB luxury, you’ll be disappointed.
Originally developed as a military vehicle in collaboration with Austrian manufacturer Steyr-Daimler-Puch, the Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen (German for cross-country vehicle) was first offered to the public in 1979, but only until 2002 were they sold in the US. They are as capable off the road as they are pleasant to look at. They are the Defender / Land Cruiser / Patrol of Germany. Luckily, as with many of these great 70s, 80s, and early 90’s icons, they are starting to age in and can now be imported legally into the U.S. Those early G-wagens endured testing in ecosystems ranging from the deserts of the Middle East to the sub-zero temperatures in the Arctic Circle. Today, they are posh highway street cruisers and we’ve just listed a very nice one for our readers.
Second Daily is proud to offer this 2002 Mercedes-Benz G500 Gelandewagen (internally dubbed the W463 variant) showing just over 76k miles. This is the first year of the Gwagen being offered through dealers in the US, and remarkably and respectfully and thankfully, the design of then looks nearly identical to the design of today. Power comes from a 5.0 liter V8, with original output numbers of 292hp/336 lb ft f torque. The seller is the third owner, the first two were both associated with EuroMotors in Maryland and the seller states it was maintained locally at the same dealer. Offered with a number of service records, the most recent service in April 2019 included a Pennsylvania state inspection as well as rear rotors and pads. The car will be sold with a fresh B Service. Also included are factory manuals and two key fobs.
This Gwagen ships from Pennsylvania and currently holds a lien with Woodside Credit. The seller states they can process all payments and title paperwork through Porsche Warrington, a local dealership willing and able to handle the transaction. Second Daily will cover up to $200 of the cost of a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) if you order one and then go on to purchase the car. So bid with confidence knowing we’ve got you covered. You must make arrangements prior to auction close and successfully win the auction to receive the $200 credit.
Outside, this Gwagon shows quite well with only minor flaws that we can see. The seller states that during ownership a silica coat, CarPro Reload has been applied. The clear plastic rear fender protectors are new, as are the fender flares themselves. The car also has a new fuel tank, rear bumper, and spare tire cap & cover. In October 2018 a reported 5mph bump at a stop sign cracked the rear bumper and the aforementioned items were removed and replaced at the same time. Also, several other small dings were remedied via paintless dent removal, save one small depression between the driver and passenger doors on the driver’s side.
The front bumper and painted metal brush bar elements show use and could be reconditioned to become a show-condition example. The lower mouldings show signs of warping. The windshield show signs of use, expected on a car of this age. Three of the four wheels look very good, the fourth shows some light curb rash. Underneath, the car shows some surface rust. The seller had the truck inspected with Main Line Overland (West Chester, PA) in August and reports that the surface rust presented no issues and no remediation was required or suggested.
Inside, black leather is accented with darker burl wood trim on the console, steering wheel, and door panels. The seats are heated front and rear and work great according to the seller. We note some normal scuff/wear areas around the door sills entry/exit points. Note the OEM MB carpeted floor mats with rubber mats over top. The seats appear to be in excellent condition, with no notable rips or tears or unusual wear patterns…the same for the door cards, steering wheel and gear selector.
There is a hole in the headliner from a prior installation of a Bluetooth microphone that has since been replaced with a Pioneer aftermarket unit that features Apple Car Play, Bluetooth audio and telephone, and a rear-view camera. Functionality works without issue, however the unit shows a warning related to not being connected to the parking brake at startup. The LCD display was replaced this summer, as is common in these trucks to become pixelated. The electric seats occasionally move in the opposite direction…gotta love the German engineering quirks that pop up from time to time.
The seller states no warning lights are present, no deferred maintenance, and no abnormal driving characteristics. The car will be delivered with a fresh B Service. This G500 features genuine 18″ G550 wheels mounted with 265/60 Yokohama Geolandar H/T tires with lots of tread remaining. This Gwagen is offered with a number of service records, the most recent service in April 2019 included a Pennsylvania state inspection as well as rear rotors and pads. The seller says the car tracks straight, accelerates and shifts smoothly, exhibits no interior thuds or creaks.
