The Mercedes-Benz G-wagon…what is it? You know, it’s that cool retro-boxy styled SUV from Mercedes that stars choose to buy for grocery shopping. It’s the one of grainy TMZ photos of Hollywoodians climbing in after yoga class. It is the essence of obscure luxury. Well, at least the ones you see today are. But the G-wagon has a past not many know about, and with production now creeping up to 40 years, some earlier examples are showing up in the affordable range. But don’t go buying one of the early trucks off the street thinking you’re getting typical MB luxury, you’ll be disappointed.
Originally developed as a military vehicle in collaboration with Austrian manufacturer Steyr-Daimler-Puch, the Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen (German for cross-country vehicle) was first offered to the public in 1979, but only until 2002 were they sold in the US. They are as capable off the road as they are pleasant to look at. They are the Defender / Land Cruiser / Patrol of Germany. Luckily, as with many of these great 70s, 80s, and early 90’s icons, they are starting to age in and can now be imported legally into the U.S. Those early G-wagens endured testing in ecosystems ranging from the deserts of the Middle East to the sub-zero temperatures in the Arctic Circle. Today, they are posh highway street cruisers and we’re bringing a unique offering to unite those two worlds here at Second Daily.
Bespoke Build Auction
Today we present to you a very unique auction at Second Daily, one that allows our audience to custom build the experience they want from that rugged retro G-wagen. We are partnering with bespoke builder Arete Automobili, specialists in frame-off restorations and custom builds for G-wagens, Defenders, Land Cruisers, and Range Rovers for the last 10 years. We have set this auction up to have two pricing levels depending on your level of customization…a basic Stage 1 or the more optioned Stage 2 level. It’s actually not an auction at all, but simply an Immediate Buy price. Here’s what you get:
Stage 1 – $42500
The Stage 1 level is the base intro level that will include the following:
- Mercedes-Benz G230 LWB non-military spec
- Frame-off nuts and bolt restoration
- Choice of hard top or soft-top version
- Choice of exterior color
- Leather seating surfaces (front and rear) or other lower priced material
The G230 will be a legally imported European spec with a gas engine and automatic transmission. It will come with a new soft top (if soft top version is chosen), power steering, power brakes, newer style Mercedes wheels, new tires, and suspension work. It will have had a full frame off nuts and bolts restoration with absolutely no rust or corrosion concerns.
Stage 2 – $55000
The Stage 2 level includes all of Stage 1 with the following added options:
- Exterior bolt-on options (winch, off-road lighting, side step bars, roof rack)
- Custom leather stitching and seating surface choices
- Wheels and tires of choice (up to $2000 allowance)
- Air Conditioning
Title and Shipping
Upon completion of the restoration and custom build, our pricing states that all trucks will be legally imported into the U.S., will clear customs and then be titled in Florida. Shipping to your door within the United States is at the buyer’s added expense but we can help arrange for this. You will also be required to title and register the vehicle in your own state according to state and local laws. Please be sure you familiarize yourself with this process, particularly if you live in California.
Bidding and Payment
Bidding is simple and similar to all other Second Daily auctions. The only difference here is, you are bidding according to the level of customization you prefer. We have set the minimum bid price to the Stage 1 $42500. If you bid that amount, we will close this auction and begin the process of payment. If you would like a Stage 2 custom build, simply place an exact bid of $55000. To do this, input 55000 into the bid box and just below the bid box check “CHECK HERE TO MAKE THIS AN EXACT BID”. That will automatically place the bid at $55000 for the Stage 2 order.
Payment is slightly different in that upon placing a bid, you will be responsible for a 50% deposit (within 72 hours) + the 5% buyer’s fee (paid immediately once the auction closes). Payment can be made to Second Daily if you choose and we will handle payment to the seller. Upon the vehicle clearing customs and titling, you will be responsible for the remaining 50% balance . References are available upon request. Most importantly, ask questions, dream big, and have fun with it.
