It has been 24.0 years since the last 240 rolled off the production line in 1993. The 200 series was produced from 1974 to 1993 with nearly 3million sold worldwide and represented the mid-range/compact car. In 1982 Volvo introduces the new 700 series to be the larger more upscale executive series. Because of the huge success of the 200, the incoming 700 series would eventually be phased out in 1992…one year prior to the 240 being discontinued.
The ‘240’ nomenclature denotes the actual model, though internally you may see them referenced as a 244 or 245, meaning a 240 4-door sedan or a 240 5-door wagon, respectively. Over the 20 year run, the 240 experienced very little change outside of the powerplant, which saw six different engines including 4-cyls, 5-cyl, 6-cyl and diesels, turbos and naturally aspiration. So because of this long tenure and relatively static core build, parts are interchangeable and plentiful. And because of the vast expanse inside the engine bay to accommodate all these variants, the 240 is quite popular in the hot-rod community for obvious reasons.
It shouldn’t take too much convincing to tell this group that cars we select to feature have a personality and a cult following that can’t always be easily explained. But we can say that no matter what car it is, you’ll find a following and a forum. How else do you think I was able to fix the lower storage panel access door on my 2008 Honda Odyssey? Remember the Merkur XR4Ti? Yep, cult following. Pontiac Aztec…hard to believe this one, but yep, cult following. In that line-up of illegitimate orphan children that the parent companies would prefer to forget, there’s no surprise the 240 is a secret rockstar within enthusiast collector cars.
We present today a 1984 Volvo 240 GL 4-door sedan with only 122k miles. Originally registered as a company vehicle, only two owners present in the history. Oh, who’s the company? The Nike Corporation. Unfortunately we wanted to offer a free pair of gen 1 Air Jordan’s to the winning bidder but two things prevented that: 1.) they’re nearly impossible to find and 2.) when you do find them they exceed the cost of many cars. As mitigation, we’re offering you some music choices you’re sure to love (see below for more info).
The seller is a dealer in the Oregon area. We have an image copy of the title showing the prior owner’s name and no liens or brands.
Both interior and exterior present very well, and seller reports zero rust issues on this one. The panels all appear straight. All emblems appear to be intact. The ‘240’ on the rear decklid is not present from the factory, that doesn’t show up until 1986. It isn’t until then that they added the ‘240 GL’.
The CarFax shows no indication of accidents, though the seller informs there was a prior minor right front fender damage present. The seller states this dent was easily removed with a paintless dent removal process. The rear marker lights show no signs of fading or cracking. The proper and original 25-spoke OEM wheels present well with all center caps intact, and tires are reportedly near new. All four mudflaps are intact.
The engine bay presents incredibly well, particularly well for a 33 year old Volvo. Many of the original factory decals remain intact. The original 2.3L 4-cylinder isn’t going to win you any drag races, but they’re incredibly reliable and good at what they do…getting you and kids to work and school on time…and getting a trunk full of groceries home.
Mileage recordings add up from new, and are mostly provided by CarFax report and AutoCheck report. A NICB VIN check states this 240 GL was not identified as a vehicle listed in the Theft Records nor Total Loss Records.
The interior presents very well, no signs of abuse or even excessive use. The blue velour cloth seats are believed to be original and show no tears and very little signs of wear. The original 4-spoke steering wheel shows no excessive wear or breaking down. Hope you saved all your cassette tapes! Second Daily will personally send you a copy of Prince’s Purple Rain or R.E.M. Reckoning (your choice) if you are the winning bidder. Really, we can do that and we will (subject to availability).
The bland-boxy car-next-door good-looks is partly what gives the 240 its cult status. In a world of over-indulgence and look-at-me attitudes of so many the Volvo 240 is paradoxically popular because of its anti-status symbol. And we love it for that. And so does the market. The 240 has been appreciating as the cult following grows and original unmodified ones are becoming increasingly rare.
It appears to be in all original condition, including the radio and owner retains much of the original brochures. This 240 is said to shift through the gears well, runs, brakes and drives fine. Recent services performed include fluid changes throughout. This is one of the cleanest all original Volvos you’ll ever find. What we particularly liked about this one is the originality. Many of these have given up to the rust fairies or been hot-rodded with Ford 302 V8’s or LS3’s dropped in. Even with the astronomically high production volume, they are very difficult to find in this condition.
Being sold with NO RESERVE.

The Reserve price is $5000…if anyone would like a second chance on that, please contact me. We have one bidder that will have that opportunity, we are making this available to anyone interested. This is an incredible original car for less than a major service on many cars.
One more comment about bidding … the Default here is Proxy bidding like eBay. If you bid over the reserve, it only will bid up to the reserve amount (or the next highest bid if someone beat you to it). So if you’re considering bidding, you may get it for less than you would using Exact bidding like Barrett- Jackson or Mecum style bidding.
